Microsoft has been on the receiving end of a lot of hate from Valve and it looks like that train is not letting up anytime soon as the company has slammed Windows 8 once again in favor of Linux.

While Linux fans will say that next year is finally the year of Linux, it seems that Valve is really hoping that next year, truly is the year of Linux. The company has not been shy about bashing Windows 8 in favor Linux and now they are getting even more aggressive with their tactics.

At a presentation at a Ubuntu developer summit in Denmark, Drew Bliss, an employee of Valve, stated that Linux is more viable than Windows 8 for gaming, according to Ubuntuvibes.com. Bliss is quoted as saying the following too:
  • Steam client is running nicely on Ubuntu and many developers have approached them with good game products.
  • Cooperation with Canonical has been good.
  • Ubuntu is preferred platform as it has a large user base and good community support with a strong company like Canonical behind it.
  • Linux has everything they need: good OpenGL, pulseaudio, OpenAL and input support.
  • New Source engine games will be available for Linux.
  • No firm time frame for Steam Linux release, but soon.
  • Copy protection is up to the game publishers.
  • The strong words against Microsoft are surely because of the Windows Store which Valve feels is a threat to their own Steam client. While the long term effect of Windows 8 and the open nature of Windows will not be known for some time, Valve certainly feels that it is a step in the wrong direction.

It will be interesting to see if Valve can move consumers to Linux as Steam has a very loyal fanbase but at the same time, Ubuntu is not nearly as polished as Windows 7 or Windows 8.

Nvidia updates Linux drivers boasting improved performance

GAMES DEVELOPER Valve has opened its Steam for Linux beta programme with Nvidia updating its Linux drivers for Geforce graphics cards.Valve has been very vocal about Microsoft's Windows 8 and the harm it believes the operating system will do to the games industry. The firm, which runs the hugely successful Steam virtual games store, has been working to port some of its titles to Linux and has formally launched a limited access beta period.

Valve has been working on porting both its Steam client and games such as Team Fortress 2 to Linux, and when it announced the beta the firm said it had 24 titles for users to buy and try out. Gabe Newell, president and co-founder of Valve said, "Steam users have been asking us to support gaming on Linux. We're happy to bring rich forms of entertainment and our community of users to this open, customer-friendly platform."

Nvidia has updated its closed source graphics card drives for Linux, claiming significant OpenGL performance improvements. The firm claims a doubling of performance, and while previous versions of Nvidia's drivers have generally fixed more basic bugs, this time around the 310 release is primarily about increasing performance in games.

Valve claims to have received over 60,000 applications from users wanting to take part in its Steam for Linux beta programme. The firm said it is currently focusing on optimising for the Ubuntu 12.04 Linux distribution because the "overwhelming majority of applicants have reported they're running the Ubuntu [distribution] of Linux," said Frank Crockett, a member of the Steam for Linux team at the firm.

Valve hasn't said how long the beta programme will last, but if things continue at the present pace, gaming on Linux might soon no longer be a joking matter. µ
